Pre-MerleFest activity. Sunday, April 21, 2013 4 PM CELEBRATION OF MUSIC. Everyone invited to honor Dr.T.R. Bryan. Before Dr. Bryan passed away in 2011, he requested the Pickin' start on Sunday prior to the festival. ARMBAND NOT REQUIRED. Free admission. Kruger Brothers, Back Porch Bluegrass Band, WAFS members, and other local musicians are expected to participate. Meet members of Dr. Bryan's family that are carrying on his legacy and his love for music. Plan on joining us in kicking off the 26th year of MerleFest All ages, musicians, dancers, singer, spectators, welcome! Tobacco and alcohol free campus. Parking in Alumni Hall lots. NEWS FLASH - WAFS has awarded the 2013 Duncan-Elliott Memorial Scholarship to Hannah 'Josie' Hoggard. Josie is a student at Appalachian State University. WAFS is honored to have a clawhammer banjo picker represent us at the Swannanoa Gathering. CONGRATULATIONS JOSIE! Thank you for visiting the Wilkes Acoustic Folk Society (WAFS) web site. Founded in 2000, WAFS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization focused on nurturing musical appreciation and talent. Our mission is the enjoyment, perpetuation and encouragement of all types of acoustic music, educating the public in music appreciation and forms of self entertainment, sharing of musical ideas, venues, performing, passing down, and preserving this region's musical heritage for our youth. The Society operates solely on volunteer participation and membership fees. The Society proudly accepts donations of time, money, and instruments. Instruments are held in our Lending Library for folks to use, experienced musicians and beginners are welcome to use the Lending Library of instruments. The Dr. Steven Duncan Memorial Music Library in housed in the Wilkes Heritage Museum in Wilkesboro NC. The library is the late Dr. Duncan's personal collection, containing books, tapes, CD's, song books, and more. Our upcoming events are listed on this page.
